First, are still on probation? Most probation terms have conditions about leaving the country. If you are still on probation, and your terms are, “you can not leave the country”, you will be begging for trouble!

As for working, you must get a work permit, and this is best done by your employer or by an attorney. And you can only stay in the country for 90 days, afterwards you must leave the country for 72hrs and then come back, and have another 90 days.

However, if you have a criminal record, it depends on what that record is even if you are off probation. Misdemeanor crimes (petty thief and shoplifting etc) will not go into international central database, but felony crimes “usually” do, especially if they are server enough from another country, and they remain in that database for God-knows how many years!

So you will be taking a gamble that when arriving in CR (all entries are now scanned from the international database) and you may be detain and maybe even deport compliments of the government as an undesirable.

Second, If you have a valid passport you can still travel (providing none of the conditions above apply) So if that is the case, whatever “criminal record” you had was not sever enough to justify it being put into a “watch list” which Costa Rica’s Immigration has. And with that said, you should be Okay to travel to one of the best countries in the world.

But as common sense tells you, you should spend a few bucks and contact a CR immigration attorney just to be safe.

Good luck …. and best wishes…

It’s difficult for foreigners to find work in Costa Rica. The government doesn’t like any one taking jobs away from Costa Ricans and the labor laws reflect this sentiment. Basically the only foreigners legally employed in Costa Rica work for their own businesses, possess skills not found in the country or work for companies that have special agreements the government..

You might be able to get into Costa Rica if you are not on an interpol black list or an airport black list.
You cannot get permanent residency or a work permit but there are ways to get around that, it would depend on immigration and the type of crime and how long has it passsed since you were convicted.
