How long until I get good in surfing?

I’m a pretty good snowboarder( can spend the day at Mammoth without falling). And I’m going to San Diego for college, so I thought I’d pick up surfing. Any idea how long it would take me to pick it up? Especially if a friend of mine is gonna be teaching me.

If you surf almost every day, You should pick it up in a few weeks. It’ll take a few years to become ‘good’ at surfing.

Just surf everyday. It’s not easy, but just do it. It’s one of those things where depending on the person, it varies on how long it takes for someone to get comfortable in the water. Just find a good board and work at it. I’d say like four to six months before you are able to surf well. give or take a few months.

You should just surf your heart out. Each day you go, you will see yourself progress as you keep practicing. Once you catch your first wave, you will most likely have the hang of it and it will be easier to catch more and more. Its not easy to say when you will be good because it depends the on the person, so just keep practicing. Good luck!

but yahh it all depends how dedicated you are.
what part of sd?
north or south sd county?
anyways knowing our waves there pretty good practice waves to learn on.
it all depends.
but it should take a while to become super solid

if u surf every day with a good teacher, it shuld take u about 3 weeks to get to the outside,but ATLEAST a year till ur actually doing good, NOT great, good
if u work on it throughout college youll start having alot of fun after half year, and be good midway in your second year, probably your third tho

like an old surf veteran said ” the best surfer is the one having the most fun ” find an easy break, show respect to the ocean, and the locals, and give back by picking up trash.

Well from the day I started surfing, it took me about 5 months to move onto a shortboard, and become an intermediate surfer.
it really depends on the person. It depends if you have the potential to become good…
